Residential retaining walls must be built wherever there is a down slope in soil. Building retaining walls are designed to keep back soil and prevent erosion from occurring. They also stop unwanted
down slope movement from happening where they are built.
Block retaining walls are almost always the best choice for larger retaining walls because it is very simple to install due to the fact that the pieces are interlocking, and it is also capable of adjusting to water that may come in between the pieces of the wall or underneath. Railroad ties were once used to build retaining walls but are no longer used because of the damage they cause to surround vegetation in the area. A permit is required for any amateur built retaining wall that is more than 3 feet in height. |
